Oak Park is Sacramento’s first suburb and has a rich and full history. Today, the area continues to shine as an example as a diverse community. Oak Park is home to people from all parts of the globe and to people of all incomes. This diversity is a source of many of the benefits of the community but also the many of the challenges.
Oak Park began as Sacramento’s very first suburb in 1889. James McClatchy park was originally a small amusment park called “Joy land” which included a quite popular Ferris wheel. After the end of WWII people were getting laid off and began to lose their homes to bank foreclosures. Property value went down and Oak Park began to become more and more “ghetto”. Oak Park is currently one of the more dangerous places in Sacramento. The city owns almost half of the homes in Oak Park, and most of them sit unoccupied and succumbing to ruin.
